Notes
Debut: Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Episode 5
DVD Time Index: 13:40
Description: Barely a glimpse is seen of these very dark colored fighters stationed on board the SDF-1 Macross. Another unofficial title "Dark Birds" is given to this unknown VF-1 variant. So mysterious indeed, it's not even known if the "Dark Birds" are VF-1As and could easily feature any of the four head units of the VF-1. The dark colors of these fighters suggest that these are the deep space equivalent of "low-visibility" hulls.

Variant VF-1A "Kakizaki" Valkyrie
Notes
Debut: Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Episode 8
DVD Time Index: 12:50
Description: A white and brown color scheme, these colors belong to the personal fighter of the large and lovable pilot Hayao Kakizaki. Though lacking the competence of Hikaru or the ace skills of Max, Kakizaki was nonetheless a recurring character in the series. This required that his Valkyrie feature a visually recognizable color scheme to distinguish his craft from the swarms of other fighters.

Notes
Debut: Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Episode 8
DVD Time Index: 12:50
Description: Instantly noticeable in a unique color scheme, this blue hull paint belongs to the personal fighter of the ace Valkyrie pilot Maximilian Jenius. Like his comrade Kakizaki, Max was also a recurring character throughout the series and his incredible skills required that his Valkyrie be very recognizable to the audience. Later in the series, Max was promoted and was given a new fighter, but his token blue colors were not left behind and became even more pronounced on his VF-1J.

Variant VF-1A "U.N. Headquarters Guard" Valkyrie
Notes
Debut: Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Episode 15
DVD Time Index: 06:28
Description: This variant, unofficially called "U.N. Headquarters Guard," was seen when Misa Hayase and Captain Global arrived at the U.N. Command Headquarters in Alaska. Several of these Battroids with green painted hulls stood guard at the landing platform to the underground facility. Since the Alaska base housed both the Grand Cannon and the U.N. Forces Command, we can assume that assignment to this guard squadron(s) was a very auspicious posting for a Valkyrie pilot.

Description and History
A variant to the standard VF-1 Valkyrie, the variable fighter "D" is a two-seater version that features two TV camera "eye" systems within the head unit and slightly upgraded firepower via a second Mauler RÖV-20 anti-aircraft laser cannon. Manufactured by the VF-1 designer Stonewell and Bellcom, the VF-1D ironically saw the fewest compliment of the main four VF-1 variants aboard the SDF-1 Macross, but nonetheless was an active-service variable fighter. A number of VF-1D units were also deployed as advanced training variable fighters, for live weapons and full combat functionality instruction. A VF-1D unit designated VT-102 was one such example with the label "Stud Seat" (Student) and "INST CAPT. DAGGER" (Instructor) found upon the exterior of the cockpit (this was the same variable fighter flown by then civilian pilot Hikaru Ichijo in February 2009).

Variant VF-1D "Virgin Road" Valkyrie
Notes
Debut: Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Episode 25
Description: Prior to the final conflict of Space War I, a truly bizarre series of events occurred that involved UN Spacy ace pilot Maximillian Jenius and Zentradi ace pilot Milia Fallyna. Milia was determined to kill Max, following her defeat at his hands in real combat and at an arcade match while Max remained completely unaware of Milia's true identity. Milia sprung the trap, revealed herself to Max and the two fought with knives. Max won for a third time and Milia completely broke down, pleading for death. However, after their second encounter, Max had already started to fall for Milia and rather than kill her, he expressed his love for her. The unlikely pair were soon married and flew in a customized VF-1D fighter dressed in Max's signature blue colors. The fighter was known as the "Virgin Road" named after the title of the episode in which it first appeared.
NOTE: A VF-1J version of the "Virgin Road" Battroid is shown for curious fans.
Addendum: Episode 25 depicts the Virgin Road as a VF-1A Valkyrie. Unfortunately, that episode was animated by Star PRO, the animation contractor responsible for numerous animation errors not only in episode 25 but several other episodes they animated. Hence it is unreliable whether or not the Virgin Road is an A-type or not. Since the craft appears in the J-type Max colors and is a two-seater, I've decided to display the Virgin Road as both D-type and J-Type rather than A-type.
