Description and History
Shinnakasu Heavy Industry's VF-1J (the "J" speculated as a prideful designation of the fighter's region of origin) is an upgraded version of the standard VF-1, typically assigned to the senior officer of an air team or to a squadron leader. Unlike Stonewell/Bellcom's VF-1D, the VF-1J remains a single seat fighter but shares the slightly increased firepower of that variant. The new head unit of the VF-1J (developed by Kyuusei Industry) features two Mauler RÖV-20 anti-aircraft laser cannons in a slightly improved configuration. Naturally, when the Shinnakasu-designed GBP-1S "Armored" system was given first operational deployment, it was installed on a VF-1J.

Notes
Debut: Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Episode 1
DVD Time Index: Title Sequence
Description: Many fans of the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross series remember the VF-1J Valkyrie fondly for the style of shading used in the title sequence of the animated show. Using artwork from the Macross Chronicles as a template, the VF-1J Battroid appears here in a recreation of the "glossy metal" style that appears when the VF-1J is seen dramatically flying across the screen.

Variant VF-1J "Command Color" Valkyrie
Notes
Debut: Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Episode 2
DVD Time Index: 16:27
Description: In colors almost identical to the standard VF-1A Northrom, the VF-1J "Command Colors" battroid was first seen in the middle of combat with a VF-1A providing covering fire. Although the name is an unofficial title at best, the title "command" suits the VF-1J Valkyrie, a variable mecha often reserved for team leaders and squadron commanders. The VF-1J "Command Colors" battroid is also seen later during Hikaru Ichijo's training.

Variant VF-1J "Max" Valkyrie
Notes
Debut: Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Episode 24
DVD Time Index: 06:30
Description: Ace Valkyrie pilot Maximilian Jenius was inevitably promoted later in the series and given command of his own air team. Thus, Max leaves behind his old VF-1A and now flies a VF-1J Valkyrie. The new VF-1J "Max" retains the blue colors from his old VF-1A, but goes from white-blue to blue-white, with nearly the entire hull painted in his personal blue colors with white highlights. As a possibly subtle addition, the VF-1J "Max" features a red stripe on each leg, which might suggest a link to Millia's red colored VF-1J, the female Zentradi pilot who becomes his wife.
