Variant VF-1J "Milia" Valkyrie

Notes

Debut: Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Episode 27
DVD Time Index: 12:27
Description: After what could only be called a tumultuous series of events, Zentradi ace mecha pilot Milia Fallyna defects to the U.N. Spacy and ends up marrying U.N. ace pilot Maximilian Jenius. Not long after, Milia is drafted into the U.N. Spacy military and given her own VF-1J in customized red colors. Much like Max's Valkyrie, the VF-1J Milia also features a stripe on each leg, this time a blue stripe which may be a subtle connection to Max and his blue VF-1J fighter.

Description and History

Originally commissioned only for special operations, the GBP-1S nonetheless saw first operational deployment in space for a routine patrol on October 2009. Then Second Lieutenant Hikaru Ichijo launched from CVS-101 Prometheus in a GBP-1S equipped VF-1J Valkyrie on a deep space reconnaissance mission to determine possible Zentradi incursion. Very little useful information on performance was gained from the deployment of the GBP-1S during Hikaru's mission, mostly due to poor tactical maneuvering. Although flight records do indicate the GBP-1S functioned as designed, both offensively and defensively, the effectiveness of the unit was left in question. Some UNS analysts critical of the October 2009 deployment suggest the poorly conceived near-simultaneous launch of the full GBP-1S ordnance allowed the enemy to intercept a few initial missiles resulting in the sequential, premature detonation of most the munitions before they were able to impact. These same analysts also note the successful defensive performance of the GBP-1S, resulting in the initial counter of several direct hits from enemy fire before the system was ejected from Lt. Ichijo's VF-1J.

Despite the less than ideal initial deployment of the GBP-1S, the system was not abandoned and further designs continue to find use in successive variable fighters, most notably the Protect Armor system found on the VF-11 Thunderbolt.

Description and History

This small, experimental Valkyrie was used only briefly during Space War I. The Orguss Valkyrie combined several systems from the Super Valkyrie in a much smaller mecha. The UNG did not pursue further development of this variable fighter after the war.

NOTE: The Orguss Valkyrie is a humorous in-joke created by the animators at Studio Nue and is a merging of a VF-1A Valkyrie and the Orguss from Super Dimension Century Orguss, another animated mecha show created by Big West. The statistics for the Orguss itself are used in this profile just to give the entry some distinction, but are in no way official.

Mass: standard liftoff 120.5 metric tons
Propulsion: 22500 kg x 4 (220.73 kN x 4)
Thrust-to-weight ratio: (empty) 6.45

Description and History

The atmospheric-escape booster was a simple, cost-effective method to increase the deployment capabilities of the VF-1 series variable fighters. Rather than relying solely upon orbiting ARMD carriers to launch variable fighters into space, the UN Spacy made use of the atmosphere escape booster to send variable fighters stationed on Earth into orbit, where the booster could be easily discarded after launch. Eventually, advances in OverTechnology and improved design would enable future variable fighters to achieve orbit unassisted and the space booster would become a thing of the past.

Description and History

Before the development of the VF-4, Stonewell/Bellcom built the VF-X-4 trial-production variable fighter as a prototype for the Lightning III. Development started in 2005 and eventually test flights were conducted in which some VF-X-4 flights were flown by Space War I veteran Hikaru Ichijo. The trial-produced VF-X-4 featured most of the key design features that would be included in the final VF-4 Lightning III design, but was initially built using 35% VF-1 Valkyrie parts (notably, the nose and forward fuselage of the VF-1 fighter). Hikaru Ichijo had a scale model of the VF-X-4 in his house in Macross City on Earth.
