Description and History

The development of variable fighters is always testing the boundaries of OverTechnology, but most continue to utilize many proven conventional equipment options. The experimental YF-19 is thus developed to deploy a special FAST Pack equipment set like nearly all the main variable fighters of previous generations. However, the YF-19 FAST Packs forgo any additional thrusters to improve performance and supply the variable fighter only with additional fuel and missile ordnance. This new design resulted in much smaller, less intrusive FAST Pack hardware and grants the YF-19 the capability to utilize the packs in both the atmosphere and in space. Two conformal propellant tanks are mounted onto the dorsal engine nacelles in fighter mode (which then become the outside shoulders in GERWALK/Battroid configurations). For additional ordnance, two weapon FAST Packs with micro-missiles are mounted on both ventral sides of the rear fuselage in Fighter mode (which become the lower legs in GERWALK/Battroid configurations). A proven safety feature included in the YF-19 FAST Pack set is the explosive ejection of one or more pieces when damaged or depleted.

Description and History

Decades after discovery in 1999, research and countless trials achieved for humanity not only mastery of OverTechnology but significant improvement and miniaturization. One of the most significant advances made by the UNG was development of the small-scale fold system. UNG scientists discovered it was still possible to create fold reactions utilizing miniaturized hardware and thus built a small-scale fold device to displace a space vehicle such as a fighter through super dimension space, allowing interstellar travel. Unfortunately this miniaturized fold system was not small enough to be internalized for a variable fighter and so lead to development of the fold booster, a separate unit to be externally mounted upon a fighter-sized spacecraft. The fold booster was not without limitations and was not certified beyond a one-way limit of 20 light years for reasons of safety. Despite the disadvantages, the fold booster was an excellent new technology enabling the UN Spacy to deploy variable fighter spacecraft across interstellar distances without the need for a carrier vessel.

Fold Booster technology was developed in the late 2030's and most of the newly developed variable fighters were designed with hard point stations to externally mount fold hardware. The YF-19 and YF-21 developed in the Project Super Nova AVF competition were both designed to operate optional fold boosters and the VF-17D Nightmare special operations variable fighter was also able to field fold hardware.
