Black Widow has been making appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Iron Man 2 where Scarlett Johansson first took on the role, followed by The Avengers and now the upcoming Captain America: The Winter Soldier, where she’ll play an important part in the spy thriller heavy plot. Black Widow will further make a big contribution to the highly anticipated 2015 release of The Avengers: Age of Ultron and now word is officially out that Marvel plans to further invest in the badass Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. with a solo Black Widow movie!
There has been wide speculation for a while as to whether Black Widow might get a spin-off title of her own, and now Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, who spoke on the subject to Variety, has given the official word on what is happening with our favorite former Russian spy:
Black Widow’s part in [The Avengers: Age of Ultron] is very big. We learn more about her past and learn more about where she came from and how she became in that film. The notion of exploring that even further in her own film would be great, and we have some development work with that. When we meet the Avengers at the top of Age of Ultron, it’s a very different landscape than we left them at the end of the first film. Partially, that’s because we love the rhythm that the comic books have developed — each of the characters appear in their runs, occasionally they get together for a big event or crossover series, they part again, and then they come back together again.
While Feige confirmed development of a solo film, he offered no additional input as to who might write or direct the film, and in what MCU Phase the film might fall into. Phase 3 of the MCU will begin after the release of Age of Ultron next year and is already packed with four confirmed films including Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, a third installment of Captain America, and The Avengers 3.
If Marvel acts quick enough they may even beat DC Comics to the punch of having the first solo female superhero film released in this current age of comic books movies. While Gal Gadot has been signed on for a solo Wonder Woman movie, that will not happen until after Batman vs. Superman is released in 2016.
So, while DC is still fumbling to figure out how a Wonder Woman movie might work, Marvel is going all out saying “you want it, sure thing you’ve got it!” That is definitely respectable. We’ll have more and more coverage on the solo Black Widow movie as it comes to light, and if the Marvel track record thus far is any indication, this will be a film worth waiting for.
