Spectre 是無形的幽靈, 代表著創世者 (Presence) 對殺害無辜者的憤怒，自基督 (Christ) 去世後，Spectre 需要與一剛去世的人類肉體結合後才可運用創世者給予的神力去警惡懲奸，籍此為世人樹立道德指引。

不同的人曾擔任Spectre, 例如30年代的 Jim Corrigan。 現任的是 Gotham city 的調查員 Crispus Allen。Spectre 是星際級的超級英雄，曾經為神戰鬥，也曾在二戰時為英國打沉整隊入侵的納粹德國戰艦, 後加入了早期 (Golden Age) 的 Justice Society of America。

Spectre 為不死身, 也善用魔術，Spectre 只怕 Presence 及 命運之予 (The Spear of Destiny)。在 Crsis on Infinite Earths 內, Spectre 曾時空穿梭到時間之始大戰 Anti-montor。戰勝後 Presence 減少了Spectre的能力 (但仍為地球上力量最強之神仙)，及指派 Spectre 留在地球專門對付謀殺犯。 因為Spectre 代表神的憤怒，所以Spectre 往往用以暴易暴的恐佈酷刑去殺死謀殺犯。

Hal Jordon (Green Lantern) 因受 Parallax 影響而成為惡魔，後來放棄自己的生命於 the Final Night 重燃太陽，之後，Hal Jordon 曾成為 Spectre 去救贖自己犯過的罪行。
