Thank you for all the kind words from everybody here.
Speaking about teaching and learning sculpting, I'm very sorry that my answer to the topic will disappoint you...it's just difficult to teach or to learn unless you are have the whole heart in achieving certain level of standard, by yourself. You have to start and try in a very hard way and to repeat and repeat the act to get just a little rewarding experience. Your build up skills and accumulate experience. You will then inspired by other great artist and continue to do better art.
I will suggest you to go through the following before doing portrait sculpting:
1. Have a very good drawing basic in realistic human and in still life, meaning that you already master the skills in observation and can execute your idea technically.
2. Study human anatomy, hardly. You have to have the basic in understanding the skull and the facial muscle groups.
3. Very important but no one will try this at first, to sculpt in larger scale.
I studied drawing in my college life and have been completely doing digital graphics since graduate. I don't have a traditional sculpting background but I can take advantage from digital sculpting. But you then have to have the computer graphics application operating skills.
In the 3D world, 3D software like Maya, 3DS Max, Zbrush or Mudbox are your tools like your pencils, paint, clay, and canvas etc.
Long topic again...but most importantly, your art fundamental matters. |
