Toyota to market 'Gundam' Zeonic-themed Auris model
Toyota Motor Corp. is teaming up with fictional company Zeonic from the "Mobile Suit Gundam" robot anime series to promote its Auris hatchback.
Toyota set up a fictional company, Zeonictoyota, in collaboration with Zeonic. It is a heavy-equipment manufacturer that produces Zaku and other enemy robots for the Principality of Zeon in the anime series.
Zeonictoyota combines expertise from Zeonic and Toyota to produce a special Auris for Char Aznable, the dauntless archenemy in the story. The character serves as an adviser and test driver for the vehicle.
The official website introduces the exclusive model in anticipation of the introduction of the vehicle for retail later this year.
The website also encourages visitors to sign up as virtual Zeonictoyota employees to collect their ideas for the campaign. Those who join the company by March 31 will receive Gundam-related perks by lottery selection.
There is no age limit, but applicants must be fans of Char, the website says.
The campaign stems from the exclusive Char Auris Concept model revealed at the Chara Hobby 2012 exhibition for character goods and hobby items.
The special model has a Char-themed body color of red and Gundam-themed designs. Toyota decided to introduce the model for retail in 2013 to meet fans' expectations.
The new project was announced at a news conference held in Ome city in western Tokyo earlier this month. Voice actor Shuichi Ikeda, who played Char in the "Gundam" series, Toyota Modellista International Co. chief designer Masaharu Matsumoto, anime studio Sunrise Inc. producer Shigeru Horiguchi and Char-cosplayer Numacchi joined the event.
