答：讀者示下那一句，我看後莫名其妙，上網搜尋，才知道是香港教育局長孫明揚上月中旬發表的講詞，細讀一遍，不禁愕然，繼而啞然，終而憮然。教育局長月薪三十多萬元，日夕鼓吹「兩文三語」，原來自己卻可以是半文盲。上述那句所謂英文，拿去任何英語國家給任何人讀，都不會有人明白，但絕對可以解釋香港中英文程度為什麼江河日下。
第七版《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》 tendency條下有以下例句： There is a tendency for this disease to run in families，意思是「這種疾病有家族遺傳的傾向」；然則 There is a tendency for lesser opportunities to develop intimate family attachments，意思應是「較不重要的機會，有發展親密家庭關係的傾向」。請不要問我那是什麼意思，問問我們的教育局長吧。
孫明揚那篇講詞，談的似乎是電視、電腦等佔去時下年輕一輩大部分時間，以致「他們很少機會和家人建立密切關係」等等。英文可以這樣寫： They tend to have fewer opportunities to develop normal, healthy relationships with close family members或 Their relationships with close family members tend to suffer。其他正確寫法當然還有不少，中學生不妨問問他們的英文教師。
教育局長公餘無聊，請上夜中學讀讀中英文吧，也算給香港人做個「終身學習」的榜樣。
句子可以簡潔流暢d..好似: It is more difficult to develop close family relationship nowadays 或者 There are fewer opportunities to develop intimate family relationships (註: opportunity 係 uncountable noun(用less), 但 refer 現象-此例指不止一個家庭可用 fewer; Intimate 比較多用於情侶或有性關係的關係上, 用close會較恰當)
