Roco Locos vs. Fleischmann
Well, now that the news seems to be that Roco will have a full HO line and Fleischmann will focus on N scale and offer specialized models in HO (see the post, "Fleischmann, the end, or not?"), I'd like to hear impressions of Roco vs. Fleischmann locomotive quality, particularly in steam locos. I have mostly Fleischmann locomotives and rolling stock, though I've purchased a few Roco wagons. My impression is that Roco is not as high-quality or robust and doesn't have as good running qualities, and I don't like the multitude of small parts one has to attach (I still need to do this with DB Umbauwagen I bought 6 years ago), though I have no direct experience with locomotives. I'm also concerned with running on tight radius curves like Fleischmann R1 (356.5 mm), with which I'm building a layout. When I looked at the BR50 (equal to Fleischmann 4175) on the Roco site, there was a comment that it shouldn't be used on tight radii. Please share with me your experiences with Roco locomotives compared with Fleischmann-- and perhaps help allay some concerns I have about what might be a forced transition. Do I have nothing to worry about? Thanks in advance!

Richard hi, I have a fair amount of both Fleischmann and Roco steamers not counting the diesels & lectrics Fleischmann :Br55, Br41, Br03, Br78 Roco :Br50 , 2X Br44 , Br57 The rest is either Gützold (Br52, Br56 ) or Liliput (Br52). Both brands have their Pro's & Cons. To start off with boxes, Flm has the edge. I like to keep my loco's in their boxes when not in use, you know, dust and all..Its easy flip up, hard plastic covers that you tuck the loco in without any hassel. Whereas Roco boxes is a nightmare to use. At least they have improved from styrofoam to sponge in their professional series lately..hopeless they are. Besides there are always bits and pieces that you have to mount on the locos and after that you can throw the boxes away. Flm locos have no bits & pieces to be attached on to. Details, Roco has a slight edge but I am happy with Flm details too. Running characteristics; Now in old models, Flm loco's uses the noisey pancake motor and it is only recently that they have mounted the silent running horizantal motors in their locos. For ready digital interface Flm uses NEM 651, 6 pole sockets so that people can utilize their FMZ decoders. I used Esu lokpilot 6 pole decoders. Actually 6 pole sockets is for N scale products not for HO. Hardwiring an Flm loco , without a ready interface is said to be hectic due to the isolation from the chassis , but hey, I have done it so can anyone else. Pulling power, I really have no complains but I am really not that kind of modeller to test the endurance of a loco by having it pull 50 odd wagons. Some one else might comment on that. As for Roco, new models always comes DCC ready with 8 pole sockets acc. to NEM 652. My only problem is with their 2-10-0 'ers. Not that good runners (and I have 3 ) They hate curves. Not to mention the ugly cardanshaft which comes out of the tender and goes thru the firebox making the whole loco all wheel drive. You hear this irritating sound when the loco negotiates tight curves cming from the shaft. I disassembled one of my Br44's and got rid of it, put some additional weight in the loco body to compensate for the loss of pulling traction and runs slightly well now. Now that Flm and Roco are one, hope they will find a consensus and learn from each others mistakes and at the end hopefully the modeller will benefit from it.
