故事的世界观于小说飞跃颠峰Next Generation延续。
在2004年Gainax制作了20周年纪念续篇动画飞跃颠峰2，或通称为飞跃颠峰2！Diebuster。
2006年预定上演飞跃颠峰第一辑和第二辑的合体电影版。

剧情简介
飞越颠峰（トップをねらえ/Aim for the Top！）是于1988年发售的原创版作品，全6集，每集30分钟。
在人类已经可以在宇宙中旅行的未来，人类受到了一群强大宇宙怪兽的威胁。它们或大或小，最大的可以比拟宇宙飞船；它们的能力非常强大，可以自由的在宇宙中以极高的速度旅行；它们的数量非常之多，要以亿来计算。虽然地球对它们并不是必须的，但一旦被选中，人类就难逃灭亡的命运。对它们来说，人类不过是寄生在地球的的细菌，不断破坏着地球环境和破坏宇宙生态，必须要清除。
人类现有的兵器对它们并不十分有用，于是人们就设计了使用缩退炉的Gunbuster（ガンバスタ-）与其对抗，女主角高屋典子就是参与这个计划的驾驶员。她的父亲被怪物所杀，所以从小就立志加入宇宙部队，为父亲报仇。
第一次完成的Gunbuster有两台，可以合体变成巨大的机器人，有着巨大的威力。然而当数千万巨大的宇宙怪兽向地球扑来时，Gunbuster也起不了多少作用。为了生存下去，人们计划以光速航行将宇宙怪兽拦截在雷王星，用旧宇宙飞船制造一个人工黑洞消灭怪兽，Gunbuster则为其护航，保证宇宙飞船在自毁前不被消灭。这次实验很成功，消灭了来犯的怪兽。于是人们计划将木星加装上缩退炉变成Gunbuster三号，送到银河系中心的怪兽巢穴，制造更大的人工黑洞一举消灭数十亿怪物。最后关头，Gunbuster三号未能起爆成功，典子爆破了一台Gunbuster引起塌缩。银河几乎全部在这次爆炸中毁灭，但太阳系由于在银河边缘得以幸存。
因为相对时间运动的关系，典子回到的地球时，地球已经过了一万两千年的时光，她驾驶幸存的一台Gunbuster进入太阳系，地球上一片黑暗，人类似乎已经灭绝。突然，大地上亮起一片灯火，形成了几个大字“欢迎回家”……

历史地位
日本机器人动画起源于上世纪60年代，以1963年横山光辉的《铁人28号》为起点。1972年《铁甲万能侠》进入成熟期。这时期主要以超现实的科幻巨大机器人和警恶惩奸的正义使者为主题的超级系机器人动画为主。进入80年代，随着《机动战士高达》、《超时空要塞MACROSS》这两部拥有细致设定的故事形作品的横空出世引起了一股社会效应，令机器人动画市场牵起了一股“真实系”热潮。
在这时，因为制作《王立宇宙军》失利而欠了BANDAI一屁股债的GAINAX公司受BAIDAI委托，想乘着当时的OVA热潮推出一部科幻机器人动画。本来就是由OTAKU组成的GAINAX抓紧OTAKU的心态，以“美少女+热血战斗+超巨大机器人”的模式制作出全6集新形的超级系作品《飞跃巅峰》（《トップをねらえ!》）。在继承传统的热血主题的基础下，大玩相对论并引入大量SF词汇来吸引考据OTAKU.。GAINAX希望这次能一举偿还欠债以赎身。成品动画质量在当时是超一流的水平，可惜不惜工本的制造导致制作费过高，且过于注重OTAKU的眼光，深奥的世界观使普通观众望而却步，再加上当年发生了连续幼女被分尸杀害的“宫崎事件”令动画游戏业界大受打击。即使飞跃巅峰的最终销量还不错，但还是不足偿还债务。但飞跃巅峰的严谨设定和新型模式却令因细分化而失去活力的机器人动画市场重新焕发活力并进入复古阶段。而飞跃巅峰在OTAKU群体中的成功使GAINAX决定以此作为日后的制造方向。这也成为GAINAX日后成功制造《EVA》神话的前兆。

身高200米的Gunbuster，是当时日本机器人动画史上最高的一部机器人。较接近的机器人包括120米高的无敌钢人泰坦３和105米高的传说巨神IDEON。机器人形态的SDF-1 Macross虽然身长1210米，但一般被视为宇宙战舰，则不作此列。而飞越巅峰2出场的Diebuster，依动画所见比地球还要高，但由于是机械结合体，所以也不作此列。
宇宙战舰Eltreum，是目前日本动画史上是最巨型的战舰，全长七十公里。
飞跃颠峰（トップをねらえ！）的名称可能是戏仿一套1972年的网球动画《エースをねらえ!》。
曾经在游戏超级机器人大战F，F完结篇，Alpha和第三次Alpha登场。

动画特色
动画中的机器人一般被视为超级机器人，但故事郤偏向真实系机器人，有精密的科学设定和描写。把相对论提到的相对时间观念和黑洞等设定加进故事中。
大量杀必死的画面，如女性裸体和女角胸部揺动的画面。
每集完结后有讲解真实科学的科学讲座。
在第六集中，除了最后部份，全集是黑白画面。

地球帝国宇宙军附属冲绳女子宇宙高等学校学员。父亲是外宇宙探查舰“宇宙号”的舰长、高谷提督。拥有乐天的性格、发达的运动神经。与田野霞共同担任Gunbaster的操作，使用上半身的baster machine 1号，使用动作映射的操纵系统。原来对机械操作不太在行，后来经过努力的特训，显示了自己的实力。
在EXELION上，与史密斯恋爱，但史密斯在一次出击时失踪，是典子受到打击，更加拼命训练，加强自己的力。曾为保护EXELION,单独驾驶未成的Gunbuster出击。
在宇宙怪兽对太阳系进攻时，与霞一起成为保护地球的英雄。由于经常以近似光速的速度飞行，常过与别人不同的时间。但乐观的典子认为自己在人生上“赚了一笔”。最后的任务后与霞超越了12000年。

天野和美
地球帝国宇宙军附属冲绳女子宇宙高等学校三年二班优秀学员，号称“玫瑰女王”。学园的同学都称她作“姐姐”。与典子共同担任Gunbuster的驾驶员，使用下半身的buster machine 2号，担任管制系统的操作。在宇宙怪兽对太阳系进攻时，与典子一起担任护送EXELION的任务。在典子的鼓励下完成任务。回来后与太田教练结婚。
与宇宙怪兽的最终决战时，负责运送实体是“黑洞炸弹”的buster machine 3号。优古将buster machine 2号让给她后，与典子一起用Gunbuster的一台陷缩炉对木星进行连锁陷缩的引爆，然后共同用另一台陷缩炉逃生。两人穿越亚空间，在12000年后出现。

珍优古
苏联的“宇宙战的天才”。曾在宇宙与天野和美较量，不分胜负,后来又在对教练的感情上较量。本是竞争对手的两人最后实际成了朋友。最后将buster machine 2号让给天野和美,自己开量产机Sizzler。

地球帝国宇宙军第七舰队所属的第四代型宇宙战舰。帝国宇宙军一等军舰，代号111号舰。2016年动工，2022年完成。全长7205米。2032年参与太阳系绝对防卫线作战，同年12月24日缩退炉暴走成为人工黑洞。

强悍的造型，优秀的变形结构＋超强的可动性＋强大细节，是这款Gunbuster得感觉；
优秀得造型无论战舰还是机器人形态都相当好，特别是战舰展示有种模型得感觉，大赞；
除了部分人诟病的玩具高度跟与原作相比较纤细的大腿，实在没有什么可挑剔的，由于变形的原因不得不让大腿外形稍微妥协，不过其优秀的变形结构相比半眼的Gunbuster，可谓完胜;
有人说合金太少，其实对于一款头高只有23cm得产品，他是及格了，0.7kg，四肢得合金部分都被塑料得盔甲包在里头，好在bandai让这几块塑料也展示出跟合金部分无异得质感，值得表扬一下；
同时用到了类似模型得内构卖点，能重现剧中得电角神拳，还有肩部得努力跟根性，fans应该都大为感动吧;
另外觉得不错得是一些螺丝位置得设计，比如小腿黄色圈得那4颗螺丝，让螺丝位不再碍眼得同时还提升了整体细节感，bandai花了点心思；
关节大量采用齿轮式，大大减低了关节活动得磨损，频繁活动关节不是问题；
众多得武器＋造型手，配合可动性可玩性当然也相当高；
图装还是一如既往得优秀，手中这款除了肩部放置武器得地方有点黄色漆，其余完好；
不满得地方，整体来说没什么缺点，当然如果能跟巨神一般高大就更好了，设定中gunbuster可是比巨神还要高大得多，bandai竟然做得比巨神还小，无语了∼
最后再来证明他的可动，合金玩具能做到这点我还能说什么，还是合体得方式
